Response from Dr. Pierone

We don't know the answer to this question. Buttock augmentation with PMMA is mainly performed in Mexico and Brazil. Much of the PMMA comes from Brazil, is compounded, and the quality is an unknown. Some PMMA is produced in Mexico for Clinica Estetica, but again the quality is unknown.
Metacrill and NewPlastic are branded PMMA products from Brazil, but are not often used in buttock augmentation because of their higher price compared with compounded PMMA.
Artefill is the United States product, but is not used for buttock augmentation because of the high price.
I know that efforts are underway to increase transparency in the production of PMMA and also provide verifiable medical grade PMMA for use. But at this point in time quality control is a significant problem.
