Reversing or Treating Fat redistribution.
Apr 22, 2008

Ok. I've taken almost everything for 23 years and have ended up on Atripla. I have an absolutely "classic" case of the "lypos". Facial wasting, minimal limb fat, back of the neck, pot belly, etc. Is it really worth trying to use plactic surgery as a fixer upper. I have been psychologically scarred in some form or another. Is it possible to remove abdominal visceral accumulation? Neck accumulation? Facial wasting etc. after such a long time.

Response from Dr. Pierone

Hello and thanks for posting.

It is certainly worth the effort to improve lipodystrophy because the psychological impact may be quite significant.

With regard to visceral and abnormal neck fat accumulation, there are studies that show human growth hormone injections may improve this complication. Another agent in testing a growth hormone releasing hormone analogue called tesamorelin also reduces visceral fat accumulation, but with fewer side effects than growth hormone.

Liposuction cannot be performed on visceral fat, but can help abnormal fat deposits elsewhere.

For facial lipoatrophy the treatment is much more effective. Facial fillers represent an important breakthrough in this area and newer agents hold additional promise.

Thanks for posting and best of luck!
