Response from Dr. Henry

Data available to date and my own experience suggest that the rate of lipodystrophy for Truvada + efavirenz is relatively low but a small percentage of patients may develop some fat problems. There has not been much published on facial fat loss among patients taking that regimen so there is even little about whether switching to an alternative drug could help. Other factors including aging, time with HIV, how low the CD4 countw went, genetics, race, gender may influence the evolution of fat problems amont HIV+ persons. Your HIV specialist is usually the best person to discuss the issue with you and what are your options. Interventions for facial fat loss that are being evaouated include use of uridine supplements and a wide variety of plastic surgery procedures but treatment remains frustrating for the time being for many/most patients.
