Response from Dr. Henry

The effectiveness of fat transfer from one area to another for the treatment of HIV -related fat problems is unclear to me. There have been some reports of adverse outcomes in some cases so I have to leave that up to your plastic surgeon and you. There is more to fat problems than simply the medications. Longer survival with HIV, a low CD4 nadir, aging, and other non-drug factors have been shown to influence fat distribution problems. Uridine is still investigational for the treatment of fat loss seen while on HIV therapy (generally patients losing fat while on D4T or AZT). It remains unclear how effective it is since results to date are limited. There are no easy definitive answers for many of your heartfelt excellent questions. KH
