Taking uridine suplements without telling my Doctor
Dec 20, 2005
I am a 37 year old male from Spain and I am about to start my first regime of HIV medications: combivir+sustiva. I am afraid of side effects. Specially mithocondrial toxicity. I know the benefits or uridine have not been well evaluated. But I found a medicine in Spain, containing uridine, sold without prescription at the price of 8,90 euros a 30 pill blister. The compositión of each pill is the following (I copy from the vademecun):citidín-5-monofosfato disódico (CMP sal disódica), 5 mg; uridín-5-trifosfato trisódico (UTP sal trisódica), uridín-5-difosfato disódico (UDP sal disódica), uridín-5-monofosfato disódico (UMP sal disódica), 3 mg en total (equivalentes a 1,330 mg de uridina); excipientes: ácido cítrico, citrato sódico 2H2O, aerosil 200, estearato magnésico y manitol, c.s. Sorry it is in spanish. The recommended dose is 1 pill three times a day. Interactions: not found. Adverse reactions: have not been decribed. It also says: due to the low toxicity of this medication, intoxication, even accidental, is not possible.
Do you think there ir a risk in taking this medication? I dont want to tell my doctor because its the social security that gives me the HIV medication every three months. And this uridine supplement is excluded from the medicines covered by the social security. Social security doctors never recommend or prescribe drugs excluded from the national health system coverage.
Thank you for your answer and enjoy your holidays!

Response from Dr. Henry

I can't comment on whether the form of uridine in the supplement you descrive would be expected to either treat or prevent mitochondrial toxicity. One other approach would be to ask your doctor whether Sustiva plus tenofovor + FTC or Sustiva + 3TC + abacavir is an option (dropping the AZT out) which may minimize the risk for mitochondrial toxicity from developing. Your HIV doc would appreciated knowing your concerns and proposed intervention in order to give you the best advise possible. KH
