RE: Husband just tested positive
Jul 25, 2003

Dr. Remien. Thank you for your last response. Since I had e mailed the question, I found out that my husband's last test was in June of 2002 AND that he had unprotected sex with a former girlfriend right after Thanksgiving 2002. In addition to the cancer, I'm pretty sure that he is HIV+. My biggest concern is will I contract it. We have used condoms religiously as birth control and never had unprotected sex. I did give him oral sex without a condom a few times, but he didn't ejaculate in my mouth. What are my risks or chances of contracting the virus. I have not had any flu-like symptoms, etc. I'm being tested tomorrow. Thank you

Response from Dr. Remien

While there are no guarantees, from the description you have provided, it sounds like it is highly unlikely that you would have become infected from these behaviors. Of course you cannot know for sure until you are tested, but again, the chances seem small that HIV could have been transmitted to you.

Keep up the protection and follow through with your physician. Take care.
