Small pox vaccination for those who work with HIV positive folks?
Jan 26, 2003

Recently I have read that the emphasis on small pox vaccinations has raised concerns about HIV positive folks and the vaccine itself. The "experts" are asserting that while the vaccination is generally safe, people living with HIV AND people who live with people with HIV should not be vaccinated. Would this advice carry over to those of us who also work with people who are HIV positive?

Response from Dr. Remien

I am not a physician nor an expert on smallpox vaccinations. There is a great deal of debate going on right now about the safety of the smallpox vaccination and its potential effect on people close to others with a lowered immune system. Your question is a valid one. The logic would extend to caution about being vaccinated if one is in close proximity with people with immune system disorders. You'll have to follow this debate and also speak with medical experts in your work environment.
