Mixed-status Lesbians
Dec 18, 2000
I'm a lesbian who has been in a 4 year relationship. My partner is HIV+. I tested negative app. a year ago. We had always had unprotected sex. We are no longer together. How long should I test negative before I can consider myself HIV free and safe.

Response from Dr. Remien

I don't think recommendations have changed since HIV testing has been in place. Most people who are infected with HIV will test positive on the antibody test within 6 months or less. It is very rare for someone to seroconvert later than that. People are generally advised to test up to a year following possible exposure. After that, it is probably not necessary, unless risk of exposure has continued or there are physical symptoms causing concern.
