Serodiscordant couple seeks answers
Feb 27, 2005
I have recently entered into a relationship with a great guy who is HIV+. We have had many long talks about the risks associated with us having sex, and so far have been very careful. Can you please fill me in on the risk factor involved , and any advice to a serodiscordant couple? I really like this guy and would like to form a great base for our relationship, but feel a bit lost.

Response from Dr. Remien

It sounds to me like you are off to a good start in establishing a strong and solid relationship. What makes for a good relationship is fundamentally not different from what it takes for all couples, HIV or no HIV in the relationship - namely, trust, respect, mutual love and care-taking, and open and honest communication.
Serodiscordant couples do face unique challenges in that they need to address and remain vigilant about sexual risk. Also, talking about all of the emotions and concerns associated with HIV can feel uncomfortable and difficult to bring up. But again, honest and open communication about all things associated with HIV concerns, as well as other issues and intimacies in your lives, is the key to a happy and healthy long-term relationship.
There is an entire Forum on this website (The Body) dedicated to risk associated with a wide range of sex behaviors. Please visit the "Safe Sex, HIV Prevention, and Transmission" forum on this website.
