Need to know
Feb 16, 2004

I had unprotected sex 10 months ago. He never ejaculated inside of me and I dont know his status. My friends and I were talking about the subject of HIV and AIDS and it really made me think. I never had any symptoms or problem with my immune system. But Im really scared about going get tested? Do you think Im at risk?

Response from Dr. Remien

The basic fact is this: Anyone who has unprotected sex with another person who is HIV-positive is at risk for becoming infected. If someone does not know their partner well and does not really know what his or her HIV status is, then there is risk. The only way that anyone can tell if they have become infected is to take an HIV test. If infected, and living in a part of the world where treatment is available, it is better to know if you are HIV-positive than not to know.
