Response from Dr. Remien

If you do not believe your test to be true (for some reason) you may want a confirmatory test, just to be sure. But if your HIV- test is accurate (which it probably is) then your daughter cannot be HIV+ (from birth) if you are not HIV+. A baby can only get HIV from its mother if the mother is HIV+. And this would happen either in utero, at childbirth, or from breast milk. So, unless you have reason to believe that your daughter is at risk from an HIV+ adult then there is no good reason to have her tested. However, you really should consult a physician on these matters.
HIV is not an easy virus to transmit and there are a variety of reasons why someone would not seroconvert when having unprotected sex with an HIV+ partner. However, because it has not happened yet, that does not mean that it still cannot happen. So do want you need to do to protect yourself.
