First 72 hours
Jul 27, 2001

I've heard that treatment with antiretrovirus drugs is effective to neutralize the infection if treated in the first 72 hours. what would it be the ideal combination therapy in this case and in what doses?

Response from Dr. Remien

It is true that treatment known as "Post-exposure prophylaxis" or "Post-exposure treatment" can be effective in preventing someone from becoming infected with HIV after they have been exposed to HIV, if administered in a timely way. It is not really known which is the "ideal combination" because there are limited studies on the topic. This kind of treatment must be done with a qualified physician and not something to be done on your own. Please speak with a physician about this.
