neg & pos relationships are they possible?
Jan 1, 2003

Do you think a neg/poz relationship is possible? HIV chat rooms haven't worked for me. I have dated and kept to myself. I told 2 people. Within months they went away. One discloded my status to people. What are the chances of someone neg wanting to be with you in a relationship? Is Is there any rights when people disclose your information? Thank you.

Response from Dr. Remien

Clearly there are numerous challenges to finding and remaining in a relationship when one is living with HIV, especially when the person he or she is dating is not infected. However, it is certainly possible to have a long-term, satisfying, and healthy relationship. Many people do it.

Disclosure issues also bring many challenges to the relationship. Both people living with HIV and people involved with someone living with HIV have varying needs to disclose to others. The important thing is for there to be "respect" when dealing with issues of disclosure. It is essential that people in a relationship talk openly and honestly about their feelings and needs regarding disclosure and for them to respect each others needs and act accordingly.

Again, although challenging, poz/neg relationships are very possible. Be open and honest with people you choose to date and demand the same from them. Good luck.
