when did the general public become aware of the HIV/AIDS virus?
May 7, 2001

when did the general public become aware of the HIV/AIDS virus? did their >knowledge and awareness stem from the contamination of the national blood >supply, and the unusual cancers occuring after organ transplants in the early 80's? where can i find other resources backing up your answer? thank you >for your time and effort. it is greatly appreciated. please send the answer to mayday157@aol.com

Response from Dr. Jackson

The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first reported in gay males in the summer of 1981 and the first case of AIDS in an infant was reported in December 1982. These cases were in the mainstream news at the time, but I think that the general public did not really become aware of AIDS until 1983 when there was a large effort to educate the public about the risk factors for AIDS in order to protect the blood supply.
