 The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first reported in gay males in the summer of 1981 and the first case of AIDS in an infant was reported in December 1982. These cases were in the mainstream news at the time, but I think that the general public did not really become aware of AIDS until 1983 when there was a large effort to educate the public about the risk factors for AIDS in order to protect the blood supply.
