Response from Dr. Jackson
The HIV seroprevalence rate (which is different than the HIV transmission rate)among lesbians is very low, but it is not zero, even among lesbians who have never had sexual relations with a man because there are lesbians who are IV drug users who have been HIV infected by sharing needles or may have received a contaminated blood transfusion. Since HIV is found in genital secretions, it is possible for HIV to be transmitted between women with exposure of HIV+ cervico-vaginal secretions to mucosal membranes. Brooks Jackson, M.D. |
