|life span of hiv newborn accorging to NPHRC
Mar 3, 2001
In an article from NPHRC named Infants, children & Hiv (just the facts, nov 99),It was mentioned that about 20 of children born with the hiv virus are slow progressors and will not be showing symtoms through 9 years of age without medication. In another article of NPHRC under Questions & Answeres (general questions),a question was asked about the approximate life span of a child diagnosed with hiv as a new born. the answer was, the slow progressors or as they are called the long term survivals may not develop symtoms until their early teens. what is confusing is that one article says these kids will not develop symtoms through 9 yrs without medication, while the other article says they will not develop symptoms till 13yrs of age but the second article does not mention if medication is used. please clarify this matter, Is it possible and if it is to what percentage, for a new born child with hiv to live a normal healthy life without complications and without treatment or medication and to show no symptoms of any kind for 13 years.
Response from Dr. Luzuriaga
Without therapy, about 20% of HIV-infected babies developed an AIDS-defining condition prior to 2 years of age. Only about 5% of HIV-infected children reach their teen years without any apparent sequellae of HIV infection. The remaining 75% develop signs and symptoms of HIV infection somewhere in between.
The availability of antiretroviral therapies appears to have markedly changed the course of HIV infection in children. For example, our work has shown that the initiation of potent combination of antiviral threapy during the first few months of life can control viral replication and prevent the sequellae of HIV infection from developing. Antiviral drug therapy can also be of benefit later in the course of disease.
