how does aids affect children?
Response from Dr. Sullivan
Most infants with HIV infection transmitted from their mothers and untreated will develop symptoms by two years of age;these symptoms include severe life threatening infections, lymphadenopathy [swollen glands], failure to thrive [poor growth], chronic oral thrush[ yeast infection in the mouth]; some children may remain asymptomatic for many years but these are a minority; all children can be diagnosed with HIV infection by a PCR test which directly detects the presence of the virus;JLS.
