 Analysis of blood samples taken in the 1950's has documented HIV infection, but it is unclear as to how long before that HIV might have entered human populations. Once HIV entered human populations, evidence suggests that it was spread by several modes, including sexual transmission, blood transfusion , mother-to-child transmission, and contaminated needles. Heterosexual transmission of HIV has occurred for years and it is impossible to pinpoint when the first woman might have acquired HIV. KL Katherine Luzuriaga, M.D. |
