Is cervical cancer considered an opportunistic infection =JC
Nov 7, 1997

I was recently diagnosed with HPV and severe dysplasia. It is my understanding that this means I have a early form of cervical cancer for which a hysterectomy is the only cure. I was told that this type of cancer is frequent in HIV positive women. Is it considered an opportunistic infection and is a hysterectomy the only available option? I can't seem to get a straight answer from the three physicians I've been to see. They all recommend the surgery because they say they have to, but won't give me any other options. I understand that you can't give me a diagnosis this way, I just want to know if there are other options and if so where should I begin my search to find them?

Response from Dr. Gallant

Invasive cervical cancer is considered an AIDS defining condition. It is not usually considered an opportunistic infection, but because the HPV virus may be involved in the pathogenesis one could argue that it should be. There are several forms of therapy available for cervical dysplasia. I suggest obtaining the opinion of a gynecologic oncologist experienced in the care of HIv regarding specific treatment options. Good Luck.
