| KS in the mouth Jul 5, 1996 I have KS in my mouth, is there a danger of it spreading to my brain from there? My viral load is dropping with protease inhibitors, will the KS go away or can it continue to grow? Is there any new treatments for KS? |

Response from Dr. Gallant
One of the few good things about Kaposi's sarcoma is that it doesn't usually go to the brain. It generally involves the skin, the mucus membranes (such as in the mouth or the gastrointestinal tract), and the visceral organs of the body, most importantly the lung. If your viral load is dropping, your CD4 cell count is probably going up as well. In some cases, KS has gotten better or even disappeared with improvements in immune function, but there is not guarantee that this will happen, especially if the KS is fairly advanced. At the very least, improving your immune function through effective antiretroviral therapy is one of the best ways of trying to slow the progression of the KS. There are a number of treatments for KS. Individual lesions can be treated with liquid nitrogen, local injections of chemotherapeutic agents, or radiation therapy. Interferon is effective in people with fairly high CD4 cell counts (over 200). There are numerous drugs available for chemotherapy, which is indicated in patients with widespread or rapidly progessive KS, or KS involving vital organs such as the lung. There are also a number of experimental therapies, including hormonal therapy (beta-HCG) and anti-viral therapy directed at KSHV, the herpesvirus now felt to be the cause of KS. |
