| Negative to HIV, but Positive to HHV-6 Nov 14, 2002 I was exposed about 10 years ago, after the exposure a month past. Starting getting symptoms of a cold, but this was different it was the sickest I had ever been, cold chills, night sweat's this went on for about a month. After that I went to my doctor and had an HIV test performed, my test was negative thank God! But I am still very sick, and the doctor's have told me everything from, in some cases people's immune system may not produce the antibodies. I have done some research on my own and i found out that their may be another virus responsible for Aids, and it's called (HHV6 variant A). I had a test ran for That virus and it came back positive. I was told by the research doctor's that if you have (HHV6 variant A) along with HIV you would develop AIDS, but if you only have HIV or HHV6 variant A one or the other but not both you would develop Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. So to get to the point have you heard of this virus? and if so are their any studies for a cure being sought after? |

Response from Dr. Dezube
HHV-6 is a herpes virus infection. To my knowledge, it has NOT yet been connected to a specific disease. Some folks believe it helps other infections, but this has never been proven. There are MANY viruses out there which infect people, yet do not cause infections. I too have sent off HHV-6 tests on patients (after they have prodded me to do so); I almost never do anything with the information. HHV-6 is quite different from HHV-8. HHV-8 causes Kaposí's sarcoma. There are many other herpesviruses also. So again, I would not recommend any change in your management to the HHV-6 result. I think it's a red herring (i.e. unrelated to your symptoms). You may be tempted to blame your symptoms on HHV-6, but I just don't believe HHV-6 is the cause. |
