| Chloroquine, does it boost anti-HIV meds? Mar 17, 2002 Dear Doctor, I am wondering, how would chloroquine match-up in any treatment? Does it boost the actual anti-HIV meds? or Does this medicine has an anti-HIV efect by itself? thanks |

Response from Dr. Dezube
There are many, many drugs which have some anti-HIV effects in laboratory experiments and in early clinical trials. Chloroquine is one such drug. Whether or not it has an role in the HIV armamentarium can only be determined by more advanced clinical trials (what we call Phase III trials). For now, it would be premature to recommend taking this drug, or most of the drugs in early clinical trials. |
