   Response from Dr. Dezube

Toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic infection seen in AIDS patients. Toxoplasmosis typically involves the brain of HIV-infected patients. We see it most commonly in patients with a CD4 count <50. It is treated with antibiotics and is curable! If possible, patients with toxoplasmosis should be on potent anti-retroviral (HIV) therapy. It is quite customary to check a toxoplasmosis test in HIV patients. If the patient has a toxoplasmosis lesion in the brain, then this is treated with antibiotics as noted above. If on the other hand, the patient does NOT have a toxoplasmosis lesion in the brain, but does have a positive toxoplasmosis test, then often the patient will receive prophylaxis (antibiotics given to prevent the development of the disease). Hope this answers your question.
