If a person is self-employed without insurance coverage and subsequently diagnosed HIV+, what are his options for purchasing health insurance coverage?
Response from Mr. Berg
Unfortunately, it really depends on which state you live in. In New York the laws are very liberal and most anyone can purchase insurance. Generally, people with HIV are denied individual insurance policues as poor health risks and must depend on employer group plans. Some states have insurance programs the will cover the major risk population. For others, starting their own company with several employee entitles them to purchase a small group policy. Other options are joing a group plan through a domestic partner or joining a group plan as a member of an association (alumni, union, etc.) I really recommend that you contact your local AIDS Service Organization for clarifiation and direction in this situation. If you don't know an organization, you can find one by calling the National AIDS Hotline at 1.800.232.4636.
