Alcohol and Atripla
Dec 28, 2008

Being recently stopped for a traffic accident and asked about medication I answered honestly to the officer that I was postive and taking Atripla to bolster the immune system.I also admitted to having one 12 oz bottle of beer but had not taken my medication for that day since I usually take it before going to bed.The officer arrested me for OVI/Impairment when the breath test was 0.059. Does having Atripla in the system affect such a minor introduction of alcohol to the system? It had been 24 hours since my last dose. Thank you.

Response from Dr. Moyle

There is no interaction between alcohol and the components of Atripla. Indeed, none of the antiretroviral agents are known to increase alcohol exposure. Unfortnately, this canot be used as a defense in court. Kind regards Dr Moyle
