Response from Dr. Moyle
HIV becomes detectable within 3-10 days of acquisition but production of anti-HIV antibodies (that make an HIV test positive) may take several weeks. Most people have converted to positive within 2 months of acquisition although to be on the safe side this 'window period' is generally considered to be 3 months from exposure. So to put it simply, someone may test negative for HIV antibodies during acute retroviral syndrome. Kind regards Dr Moyle |
