HIV organ donation
Oct 1, 2008

I have been listed as an organ donor on my driver's license for almost 20 years (I am 40 now). I ser-converted last year. Do I need to remove that from my license? Can my organs be donated to an HIV+ person? I live in MD. Do they have a way to voluntarily indicate in their database that I am HIV+ and I would still like to doante myorgans to HIV+ persons in the event of my premature demise (ie - fatal car accident)?

   Response from Dr. Moyle

Hi Tim Yes it should be removed from your license. Unfortunately there is no safe way to use organs from HIV positive persons for transplant. Transplant to other HIV persons would risk superinfection with a different HIV variant that may affect that persons disease or response to therapy. regards Dr Moyle
