Hello and thanks for the wonderful service. I've been poz for 11 years and while I have some symptoms that can be challenging, I'm doing great. My labs are very good and I have yet to start meds.
But, I have a number of problems of the joints to include degeneration in the hip (as per xray,) bursitis of the shoulder and a likely arthritis in the neck and spine (as per occ health doc.) I'm only 44 years old!
So, just out of curiosity, can there be an association between HIV and these conditions? I don't think knowing will change anything to include treatment but I would appreciate your insight.
Thanks!

Hi
If Xrays are indicating that you are getting 'wear and tear' joint problems (osteoartritis) it is probably simply a reflection not of your age but how much you have used your joints in work, sports etc. HIV is not typically associated with joint problems although people with wasting or lipoatrophy my find the lack of fat leads to less joint support.
Your doctor will do a work up for arthritis to look for causes like rheumatoid, other connective tissue disease, gout, and inflammatory markers and if indicated look for other conditions like iron overload that can give joint problems.
The management is painkiller antiinflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen) plus some folks benefit from cod liver oil, omega-3 supplements and less commonly glucosamine or chondrotin. Mobilisation and weight management are important parts of limited further strain on the joints
I hope this helps
Kind Regards
Dr Moyle
