Dear Irene
You don't tell me much about your health status and treatments. Clearly, heavy smokers are often thinner, in part because smoking increases metabolism and may reduce appetite. It's also not great for your kids or for your long term health.
There are several medications that you doctor can advise that really help with smoking cessation, the best of these is Varenicline (Chantrix in the US, Champix in EU). Zyban (Bupropion) is the alternative. Both are vastly superior to 'self will' at stopping smoking and staying off smoking.
After stopping smoking you are likely to see some weight gain, if done in conjunction with some exercise the weight should go on in a generalised way (i.e. not just on you belly). You will also note you have a lot more $$ to spend on food and on your kids.
Once you have stopped smoking please drop a line to the body to say how you are doing and we can see if anymore suggestions about weight gain are needed
Best Wishes
